Portable or standby generator for your home?

Both can keep the lights on. They work in very different ways. Here is how to choose the one that fits your home and your comfort with risk.

How a portable works

A portable generator is cheaper up front. You roll it out, fuel it, start it and run cords. It needs gas during the outage and someone to manage it in the weather.

How a standby works

A standby generator sits outside like an air conditioner. It runs on propane or natural gas and starts on its own when the power fails. You do nothing. It is the hands-off choice.

Which fits you

If you travel, have a well, or want true peace of mind, a standby is worth it. If you only need a few items powered now and then, a portable with a safe hookup may do. We can wire either one safely.

Quick tips from our crew

  • Standby is hands-off and best if you have a well.
  • Never run a portable generator indoors or in a garage.
  • Have any generator wired in with a safe transfer switch.
